Ellen Burstyn is getting a Golden Lion. The 93 year old actress, still best known for scaring audiences half to death in "The Exorcist," will pick up the Venice Film Festival's lifetime achievement award this September. Festival organizers announced it Tuesday, and honestly,it's about time. Her career runs back more than a hundred films, from "The Last Picture Show" to "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," the movie that won her the Oscar in 1975. Artistic director Alberto Barbera called her an actress of rare intensity and truth. That's not just festival talk.

Burstyn earned six Oscar nominations across her career, five of them for lead roles, and she's also picked up an Emmy, a Tony, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe along the way.

She'll get the award at the screening of "Flesh Impact," a new short film from Maggie Gyllenhaal, who also chairs this year's Venice jury. It's a Marilyn Monroe project, timed to the hundredth anniversary of Monroe's birth, and it doesn't do the obvious thing. Dakota Johnson plays Monroe at her most famous and glowing. Burstyn plays a version of Monroe nobody ever got to see,the one who might have grown old. Peter Sarsgaard and Sepideh Moafi round out the cast, and the title itself comes from an old phrase people used about Monroe, the idea that she looked so alive on screen you felt like you could reach out and touch her.

Burstyn didn't hold back when she heard the news. She said she gets to travel to one of her favorite cities in the world and come home with a Golden Lion in her arms.Wow, she said, more than once, and you can't blame her. She's not slowing down either. Up next is "Place to Be," a drama from director Kornél Mundruczó, where she'll share the screen with Taika Waititi.George Clooney is also getting an honorary Golden Lion this year. The 83rd Venice International Film Festival runs from September 2 to 12 on the Lido.
