Sohum Shah announced the news on Instagram on Monday, posting photos with Alia and writing that a new chapter was unfolding for the franchise, with the film set to release on December 3, 2027. Alia said the story has stayed with her since she first saw the film, and called joining the world "incredibly special." Reports earlier this year said Alia's part wouldn't need more than fifteen to twenty days of shooting, though insiders called it central to where the story goes next.Adesh Prasad is directing this time, since Rahi Anil Barve, who made the original, stepped away from the sequel on good terms.Sohum Shah is producing under his own banner alongside Pen Studios, with producer Jayantilal Gada also on board. This actually marks the third time Gada has worked with Alia, after Gangubai Kathiawadi and RRR. Tumbbad is widely credited with reshaping how Indian cinema tells folklore driven fantasy stories, and the sequel carries a lot of that weight on its shoulders.
The first Tumbbad barely made money when it opened back in 2018, pulling in just over 13 crore rupees at the domestic box office despite plenty of critical praise, and yet it built a cult following on streaming over the years, so much so that a 2024 theatrical rerelease drew crowds nobody expected the first time around. That's the kind of comeback most filmmakers only dream about.Tumbbad 2 arrives as Alia's next big release after Alpha, which opened well over its first weekend but faded fast on weekdays, ending up the weakest performer yet in the YRF Spy Universe.
