Apple appears to be rewriting the rules of its own iPhone playbook, and the changes could reshape how millions of Indian buyers plan their upgrades in the coming year. According to the latest reports, the company is set to launch the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026 as usual, but the standard iPhone 18, the model that typically appeals to price-conscious buyers, will not arrive until 2027. In an unusual move, Apple has reportedly extended production of the current iPhone 17 well beyond its normal cycle, effectively asking budget-focused customers to hold on to what they have or settle for an older device a little longer.

For Indian consumers, who have historically shown strong appetite for the standard, non-Pro iPhones due to their relatively accessible pricing compared to the Pro range, this shift in strategy could mean a longer wait and fewer choices at the mid-tier price point through the second half of 2026. It also signals that Apple is increasingly positioning its Pro lineup as the flagship experience it wants to sell first, letting the story of innovation and premium design lead the narrative.

And there is plenty to talk about on that front. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to come with a 2nm A20 Pro chip, a leap in chip manufacturing that promises better performance and efficiency. They will also reportedly debut Apple's new in-house C2 modem, continuing the company's push to reduce its reliance on third-party modem suppliers. Design-wise, rumours point to a smaller Dynamic Island and, most notably, under-display Face ID technology, a feature that has been the subject of speculation for years and now finally seems close to becoming reality. If true, this would allow for an even more immersive, bezel-free front display, something Apple loyalists have been eagerly awaiting.

Adding a splash of personality to the range is a rumoured new colour option called Dark Cherry, described as sitting somewhere between a deep red and purple. It is expected to be offered alongside Light Blue, Dark Gray, and Silver. Leakers tracking the launch suggest Dark Cherry could be the standout shade this cycle, a departure from the safer, more predictable colour choices Apple has offered on its Pro models in recent years.

Meanwhile, Apple's long-rumoured foldable phone, the iPhone Fold, is also expected to make its debut in the fall of 2026. Reports suggest it will feature a book-style folding design with a 7.8-inch inner display, a titanium frame for durability, and a price tag north of $2,000, placing it firmly in ultra-premium territory. The device has reportedly faced at least one delay already, underlining how challenging it has been for Apple to perfect its first folding phone. For Indian tech enthusiasts, the wait for both the affordable iPhone and the foldable just got longer, but if the rumours hold true, 2026 could still be one of Apple's most eventful years yet.
