WhatsApp users clinging to older iPhones have a fresh deadline to keep in mind. Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has announced that a handful of ageing iPhone models will lose support for the messaging app starting November 30, 2026. The change raises the minimum required software from iOS 15.1 to iOS 15.5, and it directly affects five iPhone models: the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE (first generation), iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus. These devices, though several years old, are still widely used in India, particularly among users who prize durability over the latest features, making this update relevant to a sizeable chunk of the country's smartphone-owning population.

For anyone worried this means shelling out for a new handset, there is good news. All five affected models are technically capable of running iOS 15.5, since Apple made that update available for them. This means the fix is not a hardware upgrade but a simple software one. Users just need to open the Settings app, tap on General, then Software Update, and install the latest compatible iOS version their device supports. Doing this well before the November 30 cutoff should ensure WhatsApp continues to function without interruption, including access to chats, calls, and media sharing that millions rely on daily for both personal and business communication.

This is not the first time Meta has tightened its iOS requirements for WhatsApp. Just last June, the company drew a similar line, but with far less flexibility for users. At that time, three older models, the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, were dropped from WhatsApp support entirely, with no workaround available. The reason was straightforward: those devices never received an update to iOS 15 in the first place, meaning there was no software fix that could keep them compatible. For owners of those phones, the only option to keep using WhatsApp was to switch to a newer device altogether.

The current situation, while less severe, still highlights a familiar tension in the smartphone world. Apps like WhatsApp continually evolve, adding new features, stronger encryption, and improved performance, which in turn demands more from the operating systems and hardware running them. Older phones, even ones that still work perfectly well for calls, texts, and browsing, gradually get left behind as companies phase out support for outdated software versions. For users who have kept an iPhone 6s or iPhone 7 running smoothly for years, watching a still-functional device face restrictions can understandably feel frustrating, especially when the phone itself has plenty of life left in it.

The silver lining here is that this particular update does not force anyone into buying new hardware. A quick software update is all that stands between these five iPhone models and continued WhatsApp access. Users are advised to check their software version soon and update well ahead of the deadline to avoid any last-minute disruption to their messaging.
