Naseeruddin Shah, one of Indian cinema's most respected actors, is set to make a long-awaited return to Tamil cinema after 26 years, joining the star-studded cast of Dhanush's upcoming film Om. The announcement, confirmed by the makers on X, has sent a wave of excitement through fans who are eager to see the veteran actor share screen space with some of the biggest names in South Indian cinema today.

For Shah, this marks only his second Tamil film ever. His last and only prior appearance in the language was in Kamal Haasan's ambitious 2000 period drama Hey Ram, where he played opposite Haasan's character Saket Ram in a story that explored the communal tensions surrounding India's Partition and Mahatma Gandhi's assassination. That film remains a landmark in Tamil cinema, and Shah's performance in it is still remembered fondly. A quarter-century later, his decision to step back into Tamil films for Om signals just how significant this project is shaping up to be.

Om is helmed by director Rajkumar Periasamy, best known for the 2024 war drama Amaran, which was widely praised for its storytelling and performances. This marks Periasamy's first collaboration with Dhanush, adding another layer of anticipation to the project. Even before Shah's addition, the film already boasted an impressively packed cast, featuring Mammootty, Sai Pallavi and Sreeleela alongside Dhanush himself.

Interestingly, Shah's casting brings with it a bit of nostalgia. He and Mammootty are not strangers to working together, having previously starred in the acclaimed Malayalam film Ponthan Mada years ago. Their reunion in Om is likely to be a major draw for cinephiles who remember their earlier on-screen chemistry. Adding to the buzz, Mammootty himself is marking his own return to Tamil cinema with this film, having last appeared in a Tamil production with Peranbu back in 2018.

Dhanush is not just headlining Om but also producing it through his home banner Wunderbar Films, in collaboration with Shraddha Agrawal of R Take Studios. The film's full title has been revealed as Om Chapter 1, Udhiram, The Blood Wood, hinting that this is envisioned as the opening chapter of a larger, two-film cinematic universe. According to the makers, Dhanush will be seen playing a woodcutter who finds himself embroiled in a violent confrontation with armed men in a forest, as he attempts to rescue laborers trapped in the conflict, a premise that promises high-octane action and emotional stakes.

The technical crew is equally noteworthy, with Sai Abhyankkar composing the music and Ezhil Arasu handling cinematography. While the makers have remained tight-lipped about further plot details, the combination of a decorated ensemble cast, a director coming off a major hit, and an intriguing premise has already made Om one of the most talked-about upcoming releases in Tamil cinema. The film is slated for a worldwide theatrical release, and fans across India are eagerly awaiting more updates as production progresses.
