Dixon will hold 51 percent of the new venture and Vivo Mobile India gets the rest, and neither company will own a piece of the other outside this deal. The two firms first signed on for the venture back in December 2024, so it's taken a year and a half to actually clear regulatory hurdles.Before the final nod, the deal had to pass through an inter ministerial group and get sign off from the electronics ministry and the home ministry.This is one of the first approvals to come through under the revised Press Note 3 rules, which now let companies from countries that share a land border with India, China included, hold up to 10 percent ownership without needing a fresh government nod every single time, and that's a real shift, because before this the scrutiny on any Chinese linked investment was brutal.The venture will build smartphones for Vivo, but it won't be locked into just that.Dixon said the new setup can also manufacture electronics for other brands on the side.
Vivo currently sells around 35 million phones a year in India, and industry estimates put the new venture's output at 12 to 15 million units in its first year.Its Noida plant is expected to move under the joint venture once things get running.Dixon already builds phones for Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, Oppo and a handful of other global brands, and the government has been pushing hard for more of this kind of domestic ownership, and this deal adds one more big name to a client list that keeps growing.
