The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has quietly pulled off one of the more impressive digital adoption stories of the year. The revamped Aadhaar app, rolled out to replace the older mAadhaar platform, has crossed 31 million downloads in under five months, a number that reflects just how quickly Indians are willing to switch to a more secure and convenient way of managing their identity documents once the option is made available to them.
For years, mAadhaar served as the go-to mobile companion for Aadhaar holders, but it had begun to feel dated in a country that has rapidly moved towards app-based, paperless verification for everything from hotel check-ins to SIM card purchases. The new Aadhaar app was built to address those gaps. It is available on both Android and iOS, ensuring that the entire smartphone-using population, not just Android users, can access it. Among its standout features are face authentication, QR code-based verification, and full biometric locking, all of which give users far greater control over how and when their Aadhaar data is accessed.
One of the most practical benefits of the app is the shift away from physical photocopies. Millions of Indians are used to handing over photocopies of their Aadhaar card at hotel receptions, hospitals, and other service counters, a practice that has long raised privacy and security concerns since those copies can be misused. With the new app, a simple QR code scan is enough to verify identity, eliminating the need to carry or share paper copies altogether. This is a meaningful shift, particularly for travellers and anyone conscious about how widely their personal documents circulate.
The numbers around mobile number updates are especially telling. Over 40 lakh users have already used the app to update their registered mobile numbers, a step that is essential for receiving OTPs and completing many government and banking services linked to Aadhaar. This suggests the app is not just being downloaded out of curiosity but is being actively used for essential, everyday tasks.
UIDAI has also sweetened the deal for users looking to update their documents. Updates on the myAadhaar portal, which would otherwise have cost ₹75, have now been made free until June 2027, extending a deadline that had only recently lapsed. This move is likely to encourage even more people to keep their Aadhaar details current without worrying about repeated fees.
Beyond individual convenience, the app is also being positioned as a broader verification tool for businesses and institutions. More than 100 organisations have already been onboarded for offline verification services, allowing them to authenticate identities without needing to access UIDAI's central database directly. As adoption grows, the Aadhaar app looks set to move well beyond being a simple digital ID card, evolving instead into a everyday utility that touches everything from travel to healthcare to financial services.
