The three part series comes from Brown Crew Productions, made by producers Waseem Haider and Anamay Prakash and directed by Haseef Hakeem, with Jushna Shaheen writing the screenplay and dialogues, released as one of the platform's Hotstar Specials titles. It's presented in association with Kerala Tourism, and it covers close to seven decades of the state's football history. Most football documentaries chase players and trophies. This one puts the state itself in front of the camera. Flags go up in random villages every four years, murals appear overnight, and for a few weeks football stops being just a sport there. The first episode, The First Believers, looks at how Malayalam sports journalists helped build the state's football culture long before television reached most homes.Episode two, The Keepers of the Game,follows veteran coaches and players,along with the famous Sevens tournaments that still draw huge crowds, and the third,The Home Ground, turns to families, rival supporters and kids who grew up dreaming of playing the game.Jai Unnithan composed the score, while Nanda Kishore and Darshan handled the camera work.All three episodes dropped together in Malayalam, carrying a U/A 13+ rating.
One of the central moments in the film, which dropped on July 10,goes back to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, when thousands of Malayali fans filled the streets of Doha wearing jerseys of countries that weren't even their own. Some foreign outlets called them fake fans at the time.That always felt a bit unfair, and the documentary pushes back hard on that label, arguing what people saw in Doha was simply Kerala's own football culture spilling out onto a global stage, jerseys and all.
