Veteran Bengali actor Rajesh Sharma is currently battling a serious health scare in a Kolkata hospital, with doctors saying he remains out of the woods even as they monitor his condition closely. What began as a seemingly harmless insect bite on a film set has, within a matter of days, spiralled into a medical emergency that has left fans, colleagues and the wider film fraternity in Bengal deeply worried.
The incident took place at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, where Sharma was shooting for an upcoming project featuring pan-India star Prabhas. After finishing his portions for the day, the actor was reportedly standing around chatting with local technicians in a spot surrounded by dense greenery when he felt a sudden bite on his leg. Insect bites are an occupational hazard on outdoor and forest-adjacent film sets, and like most people would, Sharma brushed it off as a minor irritant rather than a cause for concern.
That assumption proved costly. Roughly six hours after the bite, his right leg began to throb with an intensity that should have been a warning sign. Despite the discomfort, Sharma went ahead and boarded his scheduled flight back to Kolkata. By the time the aircraft touched down, his condition had visibly worsened — a sharp fever had set in, and he was finding it difficult to breathe, a combination of symptoms that pointed to a rapidly escalating infection rather than a simple bite reaction.
He was admitted the following day to Manipal Hospital in Dhakuria, one of Kolkata's well-regarded multi-speciality facilities, where doctors began an urgent assessment. What they found was alarming: the infection had not stayed localised. It had steadily travelled up from his toes to his knee, with blisters breaking out along the path of the spread — a pattern that suggests a fast-moving cellulitis-type infection, the kind that requires aggressive medical intervention.
Dr Avijit Bhattacharya, who is part of the treating team, has been candid that it is still too early to offer a definitive prognosis. The immediate medical concern, as explained by the doctor, is the risk of a blood clot forming as a complication of the infection — one that could potentially travel to the lungs, a scenario doctors are working to prevent through continuous monitoring.
News of the actor's condition first reached the public through an Instagram post by Sudipa Chatterjee, who used the platform to keep well-wishers informed while also expressing gratitude to two pillars of the Bengali film industry — the Bengal Motion Pictures Artists' Forum and celebrated actor Prosenjit Chatterjee — for standing by the family during what she described as an extremely difficult period. Their swift support underlines the close-knit nature of the Tollywood community in times of crisis.
For now, all eyes are on the next update expected from the hospital, which is likely to offer more clarity on whether Sharma's condition is stabilising or whether further intervention will be needed.
