The three hour biopic pulled in $976 million worldwide back in 2023, enough to bump Dunkirk's $509 million and Saving Private Ryan's $482 million out of the top spot for good.It hit theaters the same weekend as Barbie, and that whole Barbenheimer thing turned into one of the biggest pop culture moments of the decade. Cillian Murphy won his first Oscar playing J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who built the bomb and spent decades regretting it.Robert Downey Jr. grabbed his first statue too, for playing Lewis Strauss,and Emily Blunt and Matt Damon rounded out a cast that felt stacked from top to bottom. Seven Academy Awards total, including Best Picture and Best Director.The movie is based on American Prometheus, the biography by Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin. And for a stretch earlier this year, the film had no streaming home anywhere in America.It just vanished. You couldn't find it on Peacock, or Netflix, or anywhere you could just press play.It kept charting overseas the whole time though, holding the top spot on HBO Max in Croatia,Serbia and a handful of other countries.That always felt strange for a movie that swept the Oscars the way this one did.
Now it's sitting back on Peacock as an exclusive,right as Nolan's new film The Odyssey opens today with Matt Damon, Tom Holland and Zendaya leading a cast built for awards season,and people are already rediscovering the movie, months after it quietly disappeared from every major subscription service in the country.Rotten Tomatoes still has it holding steady around 93 percent fresh. Peacock hasn't said how long the exclusive window will last.
