Jana Nayagan, Vijay's last film before stepping fully into politics, will hit Indian theatres on July 23,a full day ahead of its release everywhere else in the world.

The film finally got its CBFC certificate on July 9, after sitting stuck in the certification process for close to seven months. That delay pushed it well past its original January 9 release, which was meant to line up with Pongal.Indian audiences will get to see it a whole day before everyone else, a nice change from the usual day and date releases.Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj and Narain alongside Vijay, who plays a former police officer raising an adopted daughter while a bigger threat closes in around them. And it's loosely based on the Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari, something that stirred up plenty of chatter online once fans noticed the similarities after the trailer dropped.Overseas audiences in places like the UK will actually get an uncut version rated 15, while the Indian print carries an A certificate after several cuts. Music comes from Anirudh Ravichander, and Sathyan Sooryan handled the camera work, with KVN Productions backing the film as their first Tamil production.Vijay is currently serving as Tamil Nadu's chief minister, and this film marks his first release since taking office.

Back in April, an unfinished copy of the film leaked online and racked up nearly 1.2 crore views before authorities pulled it down, and police made several arrests, including a freelance editor, and Vijay's also been keeping an eye on ticket prices himself, making sure theatres don't jack up rates the way some big releases tend to during opening week. That's the kind of detail you don't expect from a star this big. The CBFC listing puts the runtime at three hours and three minutes, making it one of Vijay's longest films yet.
